The season begins with the death of Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, under suspicious circumstances. Lord Eddard Stark, the noble and honorable lord of Winterfell. So he is appointed as the new Hand by his old friend, King Robert Baratheon. Eddard reluctantly agrees and travels to the capital, King’s Landing, with his daughters Sansa and Arya.
In King’s Landing, Eddard becomes embroiled in a web of treachery and deceit. After that he discovers that Jon Arryn was murdered. Because he was investigating the illegitimate children of Queen Cersei Lannister and her twin brother Jaime. Eddard uncovers the dark secret that Cersei’s children are not Robert’s heirs, but Jaime’s.
Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen, the last surviving member of the deposed Targaryen dynasty. However she is married off to the powerful Dothraki horselord Khal Drogo. Daenerys gradually gains influence and becomes more confident, hatching three petrified dragon eggs and acquiring a small army.
Furthermore in the North, Eddard’s illegitimate son, Jon Snow, joins the Night’s Watch, a brotherhood tasked with guarding the realm against the dangers beyond the Wall. Jon befriends Samwell Tarly and encounters the mysterious and deadly creatures known as White Walkers.
Season 1 Summary
Back in King’s Landing, Eddard uncovers a plot by Queen Cersei to seize power for her son Joffrey. He confronts Cersei, but his trust in others leads to his downfall. Eddard is arrested for treason, and despite his best efforts to protect his family, he is ultimately executed on the orders of Joffrey.
This event sparks a war between the noble houses of Westeros. Eddard’s son, Robb Stark, rallies his bannermen and declares war on the Lannisters, seeking justice for his father’s death. Other houses, including House Tully and House Greyjoy, also join the conflict, each with their own motivations.
